What to Measure Before Box Spring Removal

A rigid box spring cannot bend through a turn the way some foam mattresses can. Measure the item, then measure every restriction between the bed and the loading point. The narrowest turn, not the bedroom door, often decides the plan.

Take these five measurements

  1. Box spring width, length, and thickness.
  2. Clear doorway width after accounting for the door and hardware.
  3. Hallway width at the tightest turn.
  4. Stair width, ceiling height, and landing depth.
  5. Elevator door and cab dimensions when applicable.

Look for a split foundation

King foundations are often split into two pieces. Some queen sets are split too. Count each piece separately and photograph both ends. A platform or low-profile foundation may look like a box spring but differ in weight and construction.

Do not dismantle first and explain later

Cutting a foundation can expose staples, wire, and wood. It can also turn one clean item into loose debris. Ask whether intact removal is possible and whether dismantling is part of the agreed service before changing the item.

Useful photo set

Send the full foundation, the narrowest doorway, the tightest turn, the stairs from both directions, and the final exterior path. One close-up rarely shows enough.
